Conducting marriage ceremonies
  • Documents to be supplied
    - Malagasy passport or identity card of the future spouses;
    - Information concerning the witnesses together with their identity documents;
    - A complete copy of birth certificate valid less than three months prior to the date of the ceremony;
    - A certificate of no impediment to marriage from the Firaisampokontany of the place of birth valid less than 3 months prior;
    - If a prenuptial agreement (matrimonial regime) is envisaged, it must be drawn up before a notary public prior to the marriage and a copy must be appended to the documentation;
    - Case of a future minor spouse (aged under 18): parental consent is required;
    - If applicable, mention any children to be legitimised,
  • Filing of the documentation: at least four weeks before the date and time set for the ceremony

  • Diplomatic and consular agents may only conduct a marriage between two Malagasy nationals, it otherwise being absolutely null and void

  • A family record book must be issued to the family head when conducting a marriage ceremony. It includes in particular a reference to whether or not a prenuptial agreement has been drawn up

Transcription of a marriage certificate
  • The transcription may be made at any date;

  • The transcription is carried out on production of a full copy of the certificate drawn up by the local authorities

  • A family record book may be provided at the spouse’s express request by the Head of the diplomatic or consular mission at the time of transcription of the marriage certificate. The formula is valid both for the transcription of the marriage certificate of two Malagasy nationals and for the transcription of a mixed marriage certificate, of a foreign woman with a Malagasy national.

  • A family record book may also be issued at the spouse’s request to a spouse who was not given this document at the time of the transcription of the marriage certificate.

Affidavit of law
  • Documents to be supplied
    - a certificate of no impediment to marriage less than three months old;
    - a full copy of the birth certificate less than three months old;
    - Valid Malagasy passport and 1 photocopy
    - Valid residence permit or Belgian identity card in the case of dual nationality;
    - For divorced nationals in possession of the first final copy of their divorce judgment and a certificate of non-appeal or non-recourse;
    - 2 photographs;
    - Proof of domicile. If you are in temporary (refugee) accommodation, you must supply a simple attestation of accommodation on plain paper and 1 photocopy of the identity document of the person sheltering you.

  • It takes 3 days to obtain an Affidavit of Law after filing the complete documentation at the registry office.
